Mrs. Kate Larsen

Hello! You may have heard there’s a new face at Lyme CSD and you might be wondering, “Who is this person?” My name is Mrs. Larsen and I am the new Student Assistance Counselor for your school district. I am a Masters-level counselor with extensive experience in both K-12 schools and mental health settings, including an opioid addiction treatment center. The Student Assistance Program is a school-based prevention program that Pivot provides to Jefferson County. It is approved by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).

The goal of our programming is to help youth develop healthy coping skills, make positive lifestyle choices, and avoid alcohol/substance abuse problems. Topics discussed in counseling sessions and classroom lessons typically involve building positive social skills, coping with relationship or family problems, stress, peer pressure, grief or loss, alcohol/tobacco/drug use information, study skills, problem-solving, anger, depression, self-esteem, and any other issues students wish to discuss. The lessons I teach in the classrooms are all research-based curricula that have been approved by OASAS. Pivot has been providing these services to schools within the North Country for over 20 years. To learn more about Pivot and access free community resources, please visit http://pivot2health.com/at_school.htm

I will be at Lyme on Thursdays and Fridays this year, and I will be spending most of my time teaching classroom lessons, doing presentations and/or counseling individual students. If you have questions about this or the “homework” that is occasionally sent home, please do not hesitate to contact me. The program's success is greatly influenced by the level of support from teachers and parents. The work that I do is very important and it is a great privilege and honor to be a part of your child's education. Per program regulations, if your child is in grades K-6, I ask that you read, sign and return a consent form if you want your child to be eligible to see me for an individual counseling session. I am delighted to be here and very thankful that everyone I’ve met so far has been so welcoming. I really look forward to getting to know all of you and serving this community.

Sincerely,

Kate Larsen, MS/CAS
