    NYS Mandated Newly-Elected School Board Member Training

    New York State law requires newly-elected school board members to take and pass mandatory training within their first year of service.  This training requires topics on the essentials of school board governance and a minimum of six hours in fiscal oversight, accountability and fiduciary responsibilities of a school board member.

    School Board Member, Mrs, Kathy Gardner has successfully completed the NYS Mandated School Board Governance Training, which includes "Essentials of School Board Governance"; NYS Mandated School Board Fiscal Oversight Training; and Fiscal Oversight Fundamentals.  Congratulations Mrs. Gardner! 

     

    2018 New York State School Boards Association Annual Convention

    One representative of the Board attended the 2018 NYSSBA Annual Convention in New York City held October 25-27.   The Kick Off included a presentation on the ethical issues facing each one of us today, with Keynote Speaker, John Quinones, known for his work on the tv show, "What Would You Do?" 

    Countless workshops and presentations provided information regarding creativity, learning and innovation, digital literacy, life career skills, communication, educational law updates and so on.  The information obtained during the convention was brought back and shared with the entire Board, administrative team, and those present at the November Board Meeting.

     

    JLSBA Fall Dinner Meeting

    Three representatives of the Board, along with Superintendent Morrison, attended the Jefferson-Lewis School Boards Association Fall Dinner Meeting on September 27, 2018 focused on the New Mental Health Laws to Provide Instruction to All Students.

    Special Projects Coordinator for the Mental Health Association of New York State, Michelle DeOcampo, provided an overview of the law and shared best practices and techniques that can be used to help meet the rising demand for mental health services.  Building and promoting a culture of early intervention and prevention, teaching positive coping skills and responsible decision making were addressed throughout the presentation.

     

    NYSSBA Workshop--Education 2030 Summit

    A representative of the Board, along with Superintendent Morrison, attended a workshop on September 14, 2018 focusing on educating students in preparation for jobs in the future.  Those in attendance participated in meaningful discussions about changes that should occur in regard to the educational enviroment, curriculum and instructional practices.  Topics included artificial intelligence, enrollment and cultural shifts, staffing needs, instructional technology and much more!

    Guest Speakers included Mary Ellen Elia, NYS Education Commissioner and Bill Daggett, Ed.D., Founder and Chairman, International Center for Leadership in Education
